HB269 Increases Homelessness & Costs
HB269 would allow private landlords to collect both first and last month’s rent, plus security deposit of up to one additional month’s rent from prospective tenants — 50% more than what is currently allowed under NH law. This promises not only to increase homelessness, but to increase costs on nonprofit agencies and local, state and federal government programs designed to assist with rental deposits.
The House Judiciary Committee held a public hearing Jan. 28, and a recommendation is pending. Thanks to Housing Action NH members and allies who attended or wrote to Committee members. We will update you in this space as further action is needed.
